Cab Ride No 49/50 – Glasgow to Crianlarich to Oban (2xdvds)

The former West Highland Railway celebrated its centenary in 1994 and this dvd, Cab Ride No.49, takes us along the southern end of the route from Glasgow-Queen Street to Crianlarich.

Our journey, on board a class 156 Sprinter, takes us through the outskirts of Glasgow, through the Strathclyde PTE sponsored stations to Maryhill. The line travels alongside the River Clyde for some distance before branching off at Craigendoran Junction to head for Helensburgh, where the Radio Electronic Token Block signalling system comes into operation.

From Helensburgh, the line climbs into the hills above Gareloch. The MOD sidings at Glen Douglas are passed next, before we enter Arrochar & Tarbet station. At Alui station, another of the passing places on the line, we cross with a southbound train from Oban and Fort William. Finally we arrive at Crianlarich where the line divides and our journey ends.

We travelled on the 08.10 from Glasgow-Queen Street (Table   227).

Crianlarich to Oban & Return – On this dvd, Cab Ride No.50, the weather was not all that could be desired for a trip through this wonderful part of Scotland. Our windscreen wipers were almost constantly in use during the journey, with some breaks in the weather. With this in mind we have included both trips – a “there and back” programme for the price of one.

This journey was aboard class 156 Sprinter on the 9th February 1994.
