Swanage Railway = 40 Years of Galas and Special events

The much-loved Swanage branch
began services along a short stretch of track alongside King George’s playing fields in 1979. This followed the formation of the Southern Steam Trust soon after BR closed the branch in 1972. With all the track dismantled, volunteers rebuilt the branch initially to a new halt at Herston and then to a new station at Harmans Cross in 1988. Final goal of operating to Corfe Castle was achieved in 1995 with further progress along the still-surviving line to Furzebrook. This programme examines the large number of steam locomotives to operate since those early days right through to recent times.
Through our archive films, we see the early engines hired-in to run passenger services such as LMS Nos. 41708 and 47383. Then engines from various other
heritage railways who assisted Swanage develop in the early days – Nunlow, Bellerophen, Whiston,
GW 7752 and many more. From the early 1990s we see film of Southern types such as Nos. M7 30053, T9 30120,
Bulleid WC 34072, and the famous duo with 34105 Swanage in 1992.
This programme is full of footage covering the galas and special events over the past 40 years including many charter train arrivals since 2009, visits by Flying Scotsman and Tornado and others too many to mention here!

Steam news: Flying Scotsman visits Dorset and a hire period on the Swanage Branch. Scenes of it
arriving by road and operating on the branch.

Mid-Hants Railway receives its first Great Western type in preservation. No. 7029 Clun Castle
appeared alongside Nos. 35005, 34105, 30506, 73096 (as 73080) and the S160 in wartime black.
The Foxfield Railway with no fewer than nine industrial engines working mineral and passenger
trains up the 1 in 19 incline.

Great Central Railway witnesses the NRM’s Duchess No. 46229 Duchess of Hamilton which was
being run in following wheel and axle overhaul.
No. 75014 returns to operations following an overhaul on the NYMR along with scenes of
No. 34027 Taw Valley.
Cab Ride – Crianlarich to Oban: A view from the cab of a Class 158 along the stunning
route to Oban.
Midland Railway: Diesel gala included a triple-header with Class 50007, 55015 and 47401.
Also seen are 31162, 46045, 20227 and 45113.
Isle of Wight Steam Railway: Summer on the island with A1X No. 8 Freshwater and J94 No. 198.
Main Line: We see Duchess of Hamilton to and from Scarborough.
Steam on the Met – with N2 No. 69523 at Watford, Amersham and Rickmansworth.
Also Pannier L99, 80079 and Class 20227 with Sarah Siddons.
West Highland Centenary – A special feature showing Nos. 2005 and
3442 Great Marquess with Class 37s, Nos. 37152 and 37221 in Intercity livery as they
arrive at Fort William to great celebration.

A 1000-piece jigsaw from a painting by Malcolm Root who specialises in heritage railway subjects. This jigsaw depicts Battle of Britain Class No. 34072 257 Squadron alongside the coaling stage at Eastleigh Depot in the mid 1960s. The locomotive is in operational service on the Swanage Railway following restoration from Barry scrapyard condition by Southern Locomotives Ltd.
