First published in 2011 and now reprinted, this popular paperback was written by the late W. R. Mitchell MBE who was a prolific author of books about the railway and the dales and lakes.

The book is full of colour and black & white photos and 16 sections devoted to the building and operation of the line from the 1870s onwards.
