Steam locomotives have been at home in Scotland for over a century and a half – today they still run over the main lines blending with the mountain and lowland scenery.
This programme is a an evocative look at steam in Scotland from the Strathspey Railway to the West Highlands via Edinburgh and Aberdeen (1986 – 1991).
Engines featured: LNER No.2005, LMS Black Five No.5025, A4 Pacific No.60009 as Osprey on The Fourth Centenary, William Whitelaw No.60004, LNER K1 Mogul No.2005, LMS Black Five No. 44871, LMS Black Five No.5305 and LNER K4 No.3442 The Great Marquess.

Showing steam on various journeys through Crianlarich, Kinchurdy, Strathspey, Edinburgh Waverley, Forth Bridge, Haymarket, Burntisland, Errol, Dundee, Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Montrose, Ladybank, Rothcastle Colliery, Glasgow-Queen Street, Fort William, Lock Elit, Malliag, Tulloch, Loch Trieg, Corrour Summitt, Horseshoe Curve, Crainlarich, Fort William, Banavie, Annat, Lochailort, Beasdale, Arisaig, Morar, Glen Finnan, Tyndrum Summit.
‘Over the Hill’ has sequences of the first steam to return to Glasgow Central in the shape of LMS Black Five No. 44871 Sovereign on the East Kilbride branch and its historic run up the Highland Main Line to Inverness, when it had to negotiate ‘the Hill’ at Druimuachdar summit.
Other views show Black Five No. 44767 George Stephenson as it returns from Fort William.
