Full archive film containing the last weeks and months of 1966/67 leading up to the end of steam traction on the Southern Region in the July of 1967.
We talk to drivers and fireman who operated the very last services in 1967, including Jim Evans, Geoff Burch and Alan Newman. Extensive films all the way from London to Weymouth stopping off to see operations at Woking, Basingstoke, Winchester, Eastleigh, Southampton, Brockenhurst, Bouremouth, Poole and Weymouth. The Lymington and Swanage branches are covered with many views at Wareham too. More films from Basingstoke to Salisbury, the other location to lose steam that year. We see many train services at Salisbury and see the MPD towards the end in 1967. A special feature on the Bournemouth Belle in its last days with footage from Waterloo all the way down to Bournemouth. Some of the last specials to commemorate the final weeks including the USA tanks to Fawley and trains in 1966 that passed through Westbury. Electrification works are seen and trial services using the TC sets with class 3 diesels and the first Class 4 diesel workings which were to take over some services, including the ‘Belle’. This jigsaw depicts Battle of Britain Class No. 34072 257 Squadron alongside the coaling stage at Eastleigh Depot in the mid 1960s. The locomotive is in operational service on the Swanage Railway following restoration from Barry scrapyard condition by Southern Locomotives Ltd.

Modern News: Diesel Gala at the Severn Valley Railway with Deltic No. 55015 (as 55001 St Paddy)

Cab Ride – Perth to Inverness through the stunning scenery of the Highlands.
Guildford Engines Weekend at the Bluebell Railway: A special line-up of steam locomotives
with some association with operating around Guildford. Engines included – ‘C’ Class No. 592, C1
(33001) and S15 847.
Great Central Railway 25th anniversary Jubilee: This feature starts with a triple-header out of
Loughborough with Nos. 5224, 7029 and Jubilee No. 5593, running as classmate 5552 Silver Jubliee.
Added to these engines were Nos. 45231 and 34039 from the home fleet.
Paignton & Dartmouth Railway: Feature with ‘Hall’ Class No. 4920 Dumbleton Hall between
Paignton and Kingswear.
Didcot – Oxford 150 Years: ‘Castle’ Class No. 5029 Nunney Castle operated five services between
Didcot and Oxford on the day to celebrate 150 years of the route. A special event at the GWS
Didcot Railway Centre witnessed BR Pacific No. 70000 Britannia on the demonstration line and
Bulleid MN No. 35005 Canadian Pacific.
D-Day 50th anniversary: Special commemorations were held at the beginning of June for the 50th
anniversary of the D-Day landings in northern France. A special train was commissioned to take
veterans to Weymouth and along the quay tramway which was site of much activity in 1944.
Class 33 D6535 hauled the train tailed by Class 73 73109 which was named Force ‘O’ Weymouth for
the occasion at Weymouth Quay Station. The 73 then reverted to its original name Battle of Britain.
As part of the D-Day events, S15 No. 828 operated a series of shuttles between Southampton’s QE2
Terminal and Salisbury. We see views of 828 during its journey. Also present in the docks were
‘B4’ Dock tank No. 30096 and No. 777 Sir Lamiel.
Main Line Steam: ‘A2’ Pacific No. 60532 Blue Peter on the climb to Ais Gill summit, 6024 King
Edward Ist from Gloucester to Swansea, 5029 Nunney Castle from Didcot to Worcester and
70000 Britannia on the North Wales Coast.

A nostalgic journey by train from London’s Waterloo station down to the counties of Hampshire and Dorset.
We begin our journey at the London & South Western Railway’s terminus station at Waterloo which was completely rebuilt following the First World War and opened in 1922 by HM Queen Mary. Its many platforms and bustling atmosphere is seen in the mid 1960s at a time when steam haulage to the south coast was nearing an end.
Soon after our departure, we get glimpses of the depot at Nine Elms and scenes from the trackside of Bulleid pacifics at work and at speed through Clapham and on to the county of Hampshire. We stop at Winchester and Eastleigh where we view the main line trains and some local services added to a visit around the motive power depot and view older Southern classes at the end of their service periods and visitors from the LNER in the form of Flying Scotsman, the Great Marquess and Blue Peter.
After Northam and Southampton Terminus is seen, we stop at Southampton Central for an indepth survey of steam services in 1966 and 1967. We progress through the New Forest to Brockenhurst and a stopover to take a journey down to Lymington with various engines including Standard tanks and Ivatt 2-6-2Ts.
Our onward journey takes us to Bournemouth and the magnificent station buildings and locomotive depot where we see many engines on shed.
Finally, we spend time at Wareham and a trip through Purbeck down to Swanage before we reach the end of the South Western Main Line at Weymouth and its depot full of locomotives either in service or waiting to depart for scrapyards in South Wales.
