Archive of Towns
Purbeck in the Past Probably more than in any other period in history, our major towns and countryside have undergone considerable change. Fortunately, in the case of Purbeck, much of the town’s architecture and colourful gardens were recorded on film, together with important civic events by skillful film-makers. This compilation of archive footage from the 1930s and 1940s, includes farming in colour during the second world war at Church Knowle. The old films show the transformation from horses to machines and are presented by Nancy and Howard Stevens. Films of Corfe Castle and people include features on artists who lived in this quaint village. Filmed in 1937 by David Brynley and Norman Notley. Sheila Clarke recalls her childhood memories of seaside holidays in Swanage in the 1930s.Purbeck In The Past

Wimborne in the Past More than at any time in our past, our towns and cities are undergoing great change. Fortunately, in the case of Wimborne, the important events such as preparations for war and the VE day celebrations and everyday life in the town was captured by film-makers. We will see fascinating films at the start of the second world war when engineers were in the area training for any eventuality. Many scenes with soldiers in the streets of Wimborne. Other films, presented by local historian John Loader, show Reg Rodway’s films in and around Wimborne. He was a local garage owner and very much part of the community. Colour films by Reg Day show market day in the spring of 1945. The war was nearly over and local farmers gather at the livestock market. As the narrative suggests, the war is still on but the country needs to be fed.Wimborne in The Past

Weymouth & Portland In The Past - Two very detailed documentary films about Portland by Westward Television dating from the late 1970s give a very complete account of this fascinating Island. Look out as we see these rare films as you might just see yourself, a friend or a member of your family.Weymouth & Portland In The Past

For the first time, archive films of the area have been brought together to show past scenes in the harbour at Weymouth when the Channel Islands ferry and freight traffic was so important to the town. We see life on the promenade and the beach which has been part of local life for centuries. See Punch & Judy in the 1960s; last of the paddle steamers in 1967; unloading goods from Channel Islands boats; the demolition of the pier bandstand; the effects of storm damage along the Preston beach road; last days of brewing in Hope Square; sailing at Weymouth Week in 1979 prior to the 1980 Olympics; film star Kirk Douglas on location. Footage of the old Quay tramway and the very last train to Portland are included.
