The Railway on DVD
The Railway On DVD Summer/Autumn 2006The Railway On DVD Summer/Autumn 2006 - Double-issue
A special double issue detailed main line and some preserved railway steam action. Great Western Hall classes are seen on the main line to Holyhead and York from Tyesley.
We view a Southern and Somerset & Dorset loco on the North York Moors and the main line trains from Glaisdale to Whitby. And the first test run of A4 Sir Nigel Gresley.
A nice feature on the Cambrian Coast trains from Porthmadog with No. 76079. An 8F in the Burnley Copy Pit area is always a tremendous sight. We see 48151 slogging it around the area!
The Dalesman had varied motive power in the form of 45407, 30777 and Duchess of Sutherland, we see great sequences of them over the Settle-Carlisle line. Some exciting shots of 71000 Duke of Gloucester running over Shap.
One of our main features is the movement of 850 Lord Nelson from the derelict works at Eastleigh to the West Somerset Railway. We see it leaving the works and on its first trials at Minehead. The October gala at the West Somerset saw Lord Nelson and GW 2-8-0 No. 3850 working too.
Steam Dreams’ tours are featured, one with 45231 storming up Exeter Central bank with a tour for Salisbury. More Southern scenes as we follow 34067 Tangmere to Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, also to Dungerness from Canon Street and return to London Bridge.
The Bluebell Railway’s Giants of Steam gala was a great success with shots of City of Truro coupled with the railway’s Dukedog. The spectacular Terrier gala saw no fewer than six of them in the ‘pack’! We have footage of these 125 year-old engines at work.
An old favourite, Clan Line, is back and is viewed on its very first test runs and on its first revenue-earning job on the British Pullman.
We end with sequences of the highly successful galas at the Worth Valley Railway where Jubilee Leander was the star, and of the Swanage Railway event which had two visiting locomotives in the form of GWR 6412 and LMS 47493.
Approximately 160 minutes duration - just £29.95

The Railway On DVD Spring 2006 April to JuneThe Railway On DVD Spring 2006 April to June
Special anniversaries were a feature of main line steam tours in the Spring. In April and indeed throughout the year, celebrations were mounted to mark the 200th year of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s birth. With his great influence of the Great Western Railway in mind, two special trains were organised from Bristol hauled by ‘King’ Class King Edward 1. We have considerable footage of both trains, the first going to Shrewsbury on the 8th April, with the second on a round trip through Cheltenham, Worcester, Hereford and the Severn Tunnel.
April also saw celebrations commemorating the 80th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. LMS Pacific Princess Elizabeth was hired to haul a special charter to Holyhead for the event.
A new main line locomotive was launched in early May. We have sequences of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal as she re-dedicated the last locomotive to leave Eastleigh Works - Maunsell 4-6-0 No. 850 Lord Nelson. After the unveiling ceremony, we see Lord Nelson take some of its first steps out into the open air at Eastleigh, a poingnant way to mark the end of the Railway Works in this town.
The Kent & East Sussex Railway held a ‘Terrier’ weekend in May, with no fewer than five of the 120-year old engines present. Three were brought in from the Bluebell and Bressingham railways. Our footage covers the weekend and its great variety of trains put on over this light railway system.
Beattie Well Tank No. 30587 made a special visit to Sir William McAlpine’s private line at Fawley Hill in June. We have some extraordinary film of the engine climbing up the 1 in 13 gradient to the station.
Jubilee Leander is seen on it way to York, then Buxton and then top-and-tailed with 8F No. 48151 on the Chiltern Railway 100 shuttles from London Marylebone to High Wycombe over two days in May. We also cover the Devon and Cornwall ‘ponies’ with No. 76079; LMS pacifics to Carlisle and the instigation of the main line link at Taunton for the West Somerset Railway.
Approximately 90 minutes duration £14.95

The Railway On DVD Summer 2005 - July to SeptemberThe Railway On DVD Summer 2005 - July to September
The summer months were busy for main line steam - we pick up the tours to the South West and Paignton with the ‘King’ and No. 9 Union of South Africa. Also in the area over the August Bank Holiday period, was Tangmere, with its trains to and from Penzance from Exeter. Some superb footage of the Bulleid throughout Devon and Cornwall, including the banks and the spectacular crossing of Brunel’s Saltash bridge. The summer also witnessed a return to steam over the Barmouth bridge in mid Wales. The Duke performed one of its greatest feats on 3rd September by beating the record over Shap. We have scenes of it as it climbs this gradient and then over the S&C.

Published following the periods of Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn each year. £14.95 per copy on DVD or video. Subscriptions are available at £39.85 for 3 issues and £79.70 for 6 issues, saving £5 and £10 respectively.

The Railway On DVD Spring 2005 - April to JuneThe Railway On DVD Spring 2005 - April to June
We begin with an important anniversary for the Swanage Railway - it was 120 years ago in June that the line opened for traffic. Beattie well tank No. 30583 visited the line to head up the celebrations.
Also in an anniversary mode, the North York Moors Railway has held two main events in this period to celebrate firstly the 100 anniversary of the birth of Sir Nigel Gresley and secondly for the 40th anniversary of the closure of the line by BR. Main line action includes the B1 No. 61264 round Buxton, the first run with newly restored Black Five No. 45305, Tangmere’s first tours to Oxford and Bristol following overhaul at Bury and the Duke of Gloucester to Bristol.
A very special day was held at Didcot to launch the newly-built replica of Fire Fly - the Broad Gauge locomotive. We see the launch of this at the Great Western Society’s depot. Kingfisher’s Dalesman trains over the Settle-Carlisle are covered with No. 71000 from Blackburn and No. 45407 from Leeds - the first stopping train from West Yorkshire since 1967!
We see the delights of the South’s seaside lines at Buckfastleigh, Paignton & Dartmouth and at Minehead. At the latter, we view latest progress on the overhaul of the S&D 2-8-0 No. 53508 with a blue liveried tender! No. 6024 King Edward 1 is seen on the 75th anniversary run since its building at Swindon and on the Cathedrals Express.
We finish with a dedication to EWS Driver John Smith who sadly died in June. A wreath was attached to ‘The Royal Wessex’ from Eastleigh to London with Tangmere as a tribute.

The Railway On DVD Winter 2005 January to MarchThe Railway On DVD Winter 2005 January to March
The period to March was dominated by a very extra special train on 22nd
of the month. For only the second time since 1967, a steam-hauled Royal
Train was operated in the UK. Viewers will recall the 2002 train which
took HM The Queen through North Wales. In 2005 it was decided to hold a
similar event using the Princess Coronation Class No. 6233 Duchess of
Sutherland with HRH The Prince of Wales on board - this time for a visit to the Settle-Carlisle Railway. We have extensive footage of the whole event.
Two very good galas were held in January to lighten the winter gloom.
These were at the East Lancs Railway where we took a cab ride aboard
Duke of Gloucester and at the Great Central Railway where we see the double track system to great advantage.
Main line tours were quite limited in the period to March, but it was welcome to view the Avon Branch Explorer with Nunney Castle in charge on Easter Monday which took hundreds of passengers over extremely interesting routes around Bristol.
Our very own ‘The Dalesman’ was to be double-headed from Manchester to Carlisle and return and a very good spectacle it made too! The day before 8F No. 48151 was seen on its way from Darlington to Whitby via Battersby, we have two shots of it during the day.
Taw Valley and Tangmere were in action during January - we see the Flat Top Bulleid entering Southampton Docks - the first since 1967!

The Railway On DVD/Video - Autumn 2004 October to December
This autumn edition contains a feast of main line action.
The King is back. That is, King Edward I, recently out from overhaul at Tyseley. We have sequences on its first few main line turns, including one from London Victoria.
Ian Riley's Black Five took centre stage at the Scottish Steam Bash in October with numerous photographers specials arranged in the West Highland area. We were on board as the 'B1', numbered 61197, and the Black Five numbered 44996, brought back the stock from Fort William to Oxenholme. On 30th October the Black Five was hired to run over Shap and back from Manchester. this turned out to be the last tour over Shap for some considerable time. Some superb shots of 44996 are in our programme.
Southern Pacifics have been in action on the British Pullman trains - we have film of Bulleids Taw Valley ( running as Ottery St. Mary still) and Tangmere.
The Duke of Gloucester was in action following its collision at the East Lancs Railway. We see it out of London to Stratford Upon Avon and at the Mid-Hants double-headed with Bodmin.
Leander, the recently restored Jubilee owned by the Beet family, is seen at the Bluebell. The Weardale Railway is featured, with many views of the line and the opening summer seaon of 2004 with P2 No. 2392 from NELPG.
The Gala at the Keighley & Worth Valley was particularly interesting this autumn with the appearance of the Bluebell's Birch Grove. This was a first time visit for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway tank. Also at the event was the Standard Class 4 No. 76079 in between duties on the main line and at the North York Moors along with the KWVR's own stock.
We end with a tribute to Roy Wilce from Cornwall who sadly died at the end of December. Roy was synonymous with Cornish railways and has been best known recently for his attachment to the Beattie Well tank. We have a full sequence of him with the Well tank at the Mid-Hants Railway earlier in 2004.

The Railway On DVD Summer 2004 July to SeptemberThe Railway On DVD Summer 2004 July to September
This edition starts with the much heralded return to steam of Duke of Gloucester. We see footage of its two test runs in late August and its first main line on the North Wales Coast to Holyhead on 30th August. Its first run over Shap since 1995 is also covered in detail.
We travelled north to the Bo'ness Railway to view the extensive Scottish Railway Museum and large collection of locomotives, including Glen Douglas, Maude and Morayshire. We travel with the Caley tank, No. 419, up to Birkhill.
The Summer brought with it bad weather, but more importantly, two regular steam services in the South. We see The Sunny South Special which operated from Clapham in London to Weymouth and return on a number of weeks in August. Motive power was mainly in the form of Standard 5 73096, but Taw Valley is also viewed on the last train of the year on 5th September. The other train service was a Sundays jaunt down to Paignton from Bristol. The Torbay Express was seen with Castle 5051 Earl Bathhurst, but for many of the tours, Union of South Africa had to step in.
Our very own Kingfisher 'Dalesman' trains operated over the Settle-Carlisle in July and August, we have several sequences of this, of course!
Tangmere was to be seen again in new territory. Our photographers followed it to Sleaford on its journey from Kings Cross to Skegness - quite a sight. We see the Bulleid on many of its other tours in the south for the British Pullman and other operators
.
