‘Wainwright’ by W. R. Mitchell
Alfred Wainwright (1907-91)
bestrode the lonely fells of the Lake District, making notes and taking
photographs that became the raw material for a series of remarkable
Pictorial Guides. A perfectionist, he ensured that each page – art work
and text – was complete, printed without the addition of a single line
of type. Wainwright became a household name, largely through television
programmes, This slim, well-illustrated book is anecdotal rather than biographical, with snippets of interest to Wainwright fans.

'Lake District In The Past' Narrated by W.R. Mitchell M.B.E.
A rare look at this wonderful area through colour film from the 1940s and 50s, plus some early 1930s footage of village life. We also view the colourful rushbearing procession in Ambleside in the 1950s and such things as sheep shearing - the hard way.
The colour footage was taken by two film-makers living in Yorkshire who, like many, would go to the Lakes for that annual holiday or for an adventurous walk on the fells. Charles Chislett lived in Rotherham for many years and was well known for his travelogue-style productions. He took very early colour footage of the Lakeland area, during the Second World War in fact. His 16mm cine film is exceptional. We end this DVD production with a seventeen minute colour film from the 1950s shot by Fred Brackenbury of Harrogate. His professional photographic style captures some wonderful scenes on the Lakes and in the hills.
So join us in or nostalgic look around one of England's most favourite haunts and see life as it used to be. |

'Dale
Days' - Narrated by W. R. Mitchell, is
a rare archive film of the Yorkshire Dales taken
in colour during 1942. The 16mm film was taken by
Charles Chislett from Rotherham. His footage shows
the splendour of the Dales and the way of life in
those early wartime years. A visit to the creamery
at Hawes is just one illustration of farming methods
seen in his films. Enjoy this first colour film
tribute to the wonderful Dales. A rare chance to
view a unique record of Yorkshire Dales life at
a time before the full mechanisation of farming
and at a time when motor vehicles were rarely seen
on Dales roads.
This video has been produced from original 16mm
film taken by the late Charles Chislett during the
early 1940s. "Those who have never explored
Wensleydale, Swaledale and Teesdale do not know
England.... if you have seen Richmond Castle high
against the sky, sunshine on the Tees beneath the
Abbey Bridge of Egglestone, the mountains of Yorkshire
from Ingleborough to Wild Board Fell - you do not
forget. In this film you will also meet the Hen
of Hawes, the Dog of Dentdale and see the story
of a Wensleydale cheese". |

'NOBBUT
MIDDLIN' by W.R. Mitchell MBE.
After the enormous success of the two previous
Christmas titles, this book completes a trilogy of humourous books,
the other two titles being 'Summat and Nowt' and
'Nowt's Same' . The intention is to
amuse and also to evoke life as it was in the Yorkshire Dales. The
author has witnessed the transformation of an insular, self-reliant
way of life into one in which Dales farming as we have known it
is struggling to survive.
As t'owd chap said "If there were many more few of us, there
would't be enough". |

'MUSIC OF THE YORKSHIRE DALES' by W.R. Mitchell MBE.
No great music was composed
in the Yorkshire Dales, but popular tunes were absorbed
into daily life at concerts and dances and musical
accompaniment by fiddle and melodeon. Chapelfolk
revelled in hymns through out which the Bible was
set to music. The strains of brass bands were to
be heard on every hand. Songs written about the
Settle-Carlisle railway are rich and diverse. This
book is a joyous and tuneful compilation featuring
some original scores . Comic songs, brass band music,
Church and Chapel, visiting celebrities. A musical
pilgrimage.
